SEQ’s WNBA stars introduced

150409---SEQ-Basketball---Opals_0042SOUTH East Queensland’s new women’s national basketball team has unveiled its three star WNBA and Australian Opal players courtside at Logan Metro Sports Complex today. The club has recently signed Rebecca Allen, Rachel Jarry and Erin Phillips to be its nucleus for next season, all of whom will shortly leave for the USA and their WNBA clubs before returning in time for the start of the Wattle Valley WNBL 2015/16 championship season. “With the recruitment of Australian players Bec Allen, Rachel Jarry and Erin Phillips, we are determined to be a serious contender in the league and are going to challenge the top teams for the championship,” inaugural coach and four-time Olympian Shane Heal said. “These three women will be great role models for South East Queensland girls and they demonstrate their abilities on and off the court in their professionalism.” Guard Amy Lewis has also joined the club as it fills out its roster. Trials will soon be held to add further depth and provide an avenue for local players to join the team. SEQ Basketball chairman Jarrod Sierocki said he was delighted with the support the team has received from the community, council and government. “They all recognise the importance of this team for young women, aspiring athletes and the broader community in South East Queensland,” Mr Sierocki said. “We’re particularly pleased with the support that Mayor Pam Parker and Logan City councillors have provided as we look to be based out of Logan, the geographic centre of South East Queensland.” A public social media competition will soon be launched to provide the name of SEQ Basketball’s WNBL team and give the fans input into the team.
