SEQ Basketball has been granted a licence to enter a team in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL). The WNBL team will compete in the 2015-16 Wattle Valley WNBL competition. Olympic silver medallist and former LA Sparks player in the USA’s WNBA, Erin Phillips, has signed onto the team, while four-time Olympian and basketball legend Shane Heal has been appointed inaugural head coach. SEQ Basketball Chairman Jarrod Sierocki said the WNBL team would offer a new elite pathway for female players currently not accessible in the South East Queensland region. “I am proud to be involved in returning a WNBL team to South East Queensland especially in light of recent events in the sport,” he said. “I am confident that with our strong team, the support of Government, Basketball Australia, Basketball QLD and South East Queensland, we can deliver a high quality product and really engage with youth and fans alike. “We are committed to returning a high quality team to South East Queensland and are extremely excited to announce that Erin Phillips has been signed for the coming season.” Mr Heal said he was excited about joining SEQ Basketball. “I’m looking forward to setting the right culture in our team and recruiting girls that want to work hard and who aim to be the best possible players they can be. We want to seriously compete for the Championship every year and play with the sort of passion that will make our fans proud,” he said. “To have Erin Phillips as our first signing is exciting for the fans and for me as a coach. Erin plays extremely hard and her competitive nature will set the tone for the rest of our team. She is a great defender, can score and distribute the ball. She is the sort of player who inspires teammates and fans alike. “We want to show young people that it’s achievable to play professional basketball in the SEQ region.” Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Anthony Moore said he was thrilled with the inclusion of a new team in the fast growing South East Queensland market into the Wattle Valley WNBL. “We had two strong bid applications and the process we set in place to review was designed to ensure that the successful bid team was here for the long term. I congratulate Jarrod Sierocki and his bid team for their professional approach throughout the process,” he said. “With the Townsville Fire securing its first WNBL Championship, the opportunity for an in-state rivalry to begin next season adds a little something to the 2015/16 Wattle Valley WNBL Season.” Moore added. A public social media competition will be launched to provide the name of SEQ Basketball’s WNBL team and give the fans input into the team. SEQ Basketball also has plans to develop a community engagement program to grow the sport in SEQ. The program would include a Bullets Academy, camps and clinics and a school partnership program. The WNBL team will be managed by a diverse team that has significant experience in the delivery of professional basketball programs to the local community. The team is: · Jarrod Sierocki – Chairman · Samuel Miszkowski – Deputy Chairman and Government delegate · Phil Stoneman – Sponsorship and Corporate Strategy · Phil Binder – Operations and Community Programs · Rodger Smith – Basketball Development · Shane Heal – Head Coach ENDS Media enquiries to Brenton Gibbs
